چکیده

We study a resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson junction, which is driven by a combination of time-periodic and constant currents. Our investigations concern three main problems: (A) the voltage fluctuations across the junction; (B) the quality of transport expressed in terms of the P eclet number; and (C) the efficiency of energy transduction from external currents. These issues are discussed in different parameter regimes that lead to: (i) absolute negative conductance; (ii) negative differential conductance; and (iii) normal, Ohmic-like conductance. Conditions for optimal operation of the system are studied. & 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Anomalous transport in biased ac-driven Josephson junctions: Negative conductances

We investigate classical anomalous electrical transport in a driven, resistively, and capacitively shunted Josephson junction device. Intriguing transport phenomena are identified in chaotic regimes when the junction is subjected to both a time-periodic ac and a constant biasing dc current. The dependence of the voltage across the junction on the dc exhibits a rich diversity of anomalous transp...

Current responses and voltage fluctuations in Josephson-junction systems

– We consider arrays of Josephson junctions as well as single junctions in both the classical and quantum-mechanical regimes, and examine the generalized (frequency-dependent) resistance, which describes the dynamic responses of such Josephson-junction systems to external currents. It is shown that the generalized resistance and the power spectrum of voltage fluctuations are related via the flu...

Large sample-to-sample fluctuations of the nonequilibrium critical current through mesoscopic Josephson junctions

We present a theory for the nonequilibrium current in a mesoscopic Josephson junction which is coupled to a normal electron reservoir, and apply it to a chaotic junction. Large sample-to-sample fluctuations of the critical current Ic are found, with rms Ic.ANeD/\ , when the voltage difference eV between the electron reservoir and the junction exceeds the superconducting gap D and the number of ...

Quantum charge diffusion in underdamped Josephson junctions and superconducting nanowires

The effect of quantum fluctuations on the current-voltage characteristics of Josephson junctions and superconducting nanowires is studied in the underdamped limit. Quantum fluctuations induce transitions between a Coulomb–blockade and a supercurrent branch, and can significantly modify the shape of current-voltage characteristics in the case of a highly resistive environment. Owing to the phase...

Mesoscopic Josephson Effect

In the classical Josephson effect the phase difference across the junction is well defined, and the supercurrent is reduced only weakly by phase diffusion. For mesoscopic junctions with small capacitance the phase undergoes large quantum fluctuations, and the current is also decreased by Coulomb blockade effects. We discuss the behavior of the current-voltage characteristics in a large range of...
